JOELLE STEELE'S

LANDSCAPE DESIGN & CONSULTATION

(360) 918-8239

joelle@joellesteele.com

I'm a landscape designer providing residential and commercial landscape design and consultation to the greater Olympia area of Washington state. My clients include homeowners and design/build landscape contractors.

I design decks, patios, ponds, aviaries, cat/dog runs, theme gardens, xeriscapes (drought-tolerant landscapes), rock gardens, and Japanese (Zen) gardens -- among many other things. For the budget-conscious, I also do re-designs and relocation plans, working with what you already have and building on that. And, if you just want to get some questions answered or get a second opinion, I offer landscape consultations.

The Design Process

A good design forms the basis of every successful landscape. Whether you're starting from scratch with bare dirt or have a mature existing landscape, you can benefit greatly from a design plan. Having a design to follow will allow you to either install your landscape all at one time or do it in stages. It will help you if you're adding to and/or making use of what you've already got, possibly by first relocating a plant here or there, and then adding new plant materials.

BEFORE & AFTER

AUGUST: A badly neglected yard, just bare dirt, overgrown vines, and untrimmed trees.

SEPTEMBER, same year: Trim the trees and cut back the vines. Create a landscape design. Install a small retaining wall and pavers, add some plant materials, and top it all off with bark.

OCTOBER (one year later). Enjoy a lovely new landscape!

Every landscape is different, and I want you to be happy with yours. So, I always take the time to find out as much about what you like, want, and can afford, as I do about what will grow well and look good in the space. I begin by analyzing your existing landscape -- or the bare yard of your new home -- and then we discuss what you like, how you will be using the space, your budget for the installation, and how you plan to maintain it once it is built. I will then take some photos and/or  measurements and create a design sketch (schematic) with a corresponding list of plant and materials options.

Designs can take anywhere from six to twenty hours or more. It all depends on the complexity of the project -- how big, how many plants, any hardscape elements to be designed, any required construction details, etc.

Additional Services

For an additional hourly charge I can supervise and make sure your landscape is installed correctly and/or I can go to the nursery of your choice and hand-select plants for you.

I am also available to appear as an expert witness, testifying to usual and customary practices in the landscape trades, and providing objective opinions, observations, and clarification regarding disputes (testifying only for the benefit of the Court with no advocacy for either client or landscape contractor).

Fees & Payment

Most residential design schematics start around $250 for a simple back yard, a little more for a front yard. Most commercial design schematics start at about $500 for simple relocation plans and planting plans with little to no hardscape.

My estimates are free. If you agree to the amount, I will then send you a short agreement to sign. Any additional services, such as major revisions to the design or helping with supervision or plant selection, are billed at a rate of $45/hr, one hour minimum.

Payment is due immediately upon receipt of the design schematic. I accept personal and business checks. I also accept credit cards by PayPal over the Internet (but not by the phone).

Experience & Education

In addition to a bachelor's degree in Language Arts, I have Vocational Certificates in Ornamental Horticulture and Interior Design (with an emphasis in Space Planning). I also have a variety of certificates of achievement for specialty horticulture classes and workshops I have completed.
